Free dating apps have made meeting new people more accessible than ever. Anyone can create a profile, discover potential connections, and start a conversation without paying. Yet millions of people still spend money on premium dating features and organized dating experiences.
Why?
The answer lies in what people believe they are paying for. Some value greater control over online discovery. Others value a service that helps them move from an introduction to meeting someone in person.
At Clique83, we see an opportunity in that second category. Our approach to offline dating connects monetization with the services required to turn mutual interest into a real-life meeting. Understanding this opportunity starts with the evidence behind willingness to pay for dating apps, particularly in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
Why do people pay for dating services when free apps offer matches?
People pay for dating services when they see enough value in the additional experience, functionality, or assistance being offered.
Free dating apps make discovering new people accessible. However, a match still leaves users responsible for turning that initial interest into a real meeting. Premium subscriptions offer greater control within the app, while coordinated offline dating services address a different part of the journey.
The differences become clearer when we compare what each experience actually provides.
Dating experience | Free dating apps | Premium dating apps | Coordinated offline dating (Coffee Date by Clique83) |
Finding someone | Browse profiles and discover potential matches. | Access additional discovery features, visibility, or controls. | Receive one AI-suggested introduction at a time, with a Match Letter. |
Understanding the person | Rely on profiles and conversations to learn about someone. | Generally follow the same process, with additional app features. | Read about the person's lifestyle, values, and differences before deciding to meet. |
Moving toward a date | Initiate conversations and establish mutual interest. | Continue conversations and decide when to suggest meeting. | Both people independently decide if they want to meet, without prolonged pre-date messaging. |
Arranging the meeting | Coordinate availability, choose a venue, and confirm details themselves. | Generally remain responsible for organizing the date. | Coffee Date coordinates the agreed meeting at a partner venue. |
The differences reveal a specific opportunity in paid dating: reducing the effort and uncertainty between discovering someone and actually meeting them.
A larger dating pool offers more possibilities, but more possibilities also demand attention. Pew Research Center's 2023 study found that 37% of U.S. adults believed dating platforms offered too many choices. The finding highlights a potential source of friction in digital dating, rather than proof that users will pay to avoid it.
At Clique83, we focus on the work that happens before a first date. Our one-at-a-time introductions give users space to consider a person without navigating multiple active matches. When interest is mutual, we take care of the practical arrangements so both people have a confirmed plan.
The distinction is important: users are paying for a defined service that supports the journey to meeting someone, rather than purchasing a better partner or a guaranteed relationship.
What does the market tell us about willingness to pay for dating?
Market research and industry revenue data confirm that people spend money on dating services, including in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The evidence also shows considerable differences across markets and customer groups.
Evidence from Vietnam and Southeast Asia
Market | Research findings | What the evidence tells us |
Vietnam, 2020 | 30% of dating app users in B&Company's survey reported having paid for an app. | Paid dating behavior existed among surveyed Vietnamese users. |
Vietnam, 2026 | Tinder, Bumble, and Badoo appeared among the leading top-grossing dating apps on Vietnam's Android charts. | Dating apps continue to generate in-app revenue in the Vietnamese market. |
Indonesia, 2024 | 55% of respondents in a Populix study expressed willingness to pay for premium dating services. | A meaningful segment expressed interest in purchasing additional dating value. |
Singapore, 2019 | Consumers spent US 7.1 million on dating apps,up from US5 million in 2018. | Historical app spending demonstrates established consumer payment behavior. |
Vietnam: Evidence of previous payments
B&Company's May 2020 survey of 244 respondents aged 18–49 found that around 30% of dating app users had paid for online dating services.
The sample was small and the findings are historical. They provide early evidence of payment behavior among surveyed Vietnamese users rather than a current national conversion rate.
More recently, Sensor Tower's Vietnam Android dating charts placed Tinder, Bumble, and Badoo among top-grossing applications in July 2026. The ranking confirms monetization activity within the category, although it does not disclose total Vietnamese consumer spending.

Indonesia: Trust and premium payment intentions
Populix's January 2024 survey of 1,165 Indonesian respondents found that 55% expressed willingness to pay for premium dating subscriptions in exchange for access to users they perceived as more credible, alongside additional security and functionality.
The study also examined spending among 405 premium dating app subscribers. According to Katadata's analysis of the survey, 55% of this group reported monthly spending below IDR 100,000, while 37% reported spending between IDR 100,000 and IDR 200,000.
These results reveal purchasing behavior and budget sensitivity within the surveyed groups. They do not establish a universal price benchmark for Southeast Asian dating services.
Singapore: Established spending and offline alternatives
App Annie data reported by Marketing-Interactive in February 2020 showed that Singaporean consumers spent US7.1million on dating apps in 2019,increasing from US3.9 million in 2017.
Singapore also offers more recent evidence of paid offline dating formats. In February 2025, The Business Times reported that the number of singles and dating events hosted on Eventbrite in Singapore had grown from 30 in 2022 to 240 in 2024.
Event growth indicates increasing activity in the offline category. The willingness of users to purchase particular experiences requires separate payment evidence.
What do global dating companies reveal?
Public financial disclosures offer another perspective: premium dating is capable of generating substantial revenue, while paying-user growth remains uneven.
In the second quarter of 2026:
Hinge: Match Group reported US$204 million in direct revenue, up 22% year over year, with 2 million payers, up 17%.
Bumble Inc.: The company reported 3.2 million paying users, down 16.4% year over year, while revenue declined 15.2% to US$210.5 million.
The contrast illustrates an important business distinction. Established demand for premium dating does not guarantee continued growth for every platform.
Together, the available evidence supports a clear conclusion: willingness to pay exists, while commercial performance depends on the value proposition, customer economics, and continued demand for each product.

What value are people actually paying for in dating?
People pay for dating services because the additional functionality or assistance addresses something they value in the dating process.
The value differs according to the product being purchased.
Greater control over online discovery
Traditional premium subscriptions offer features such as increased visibility, more profile interactions, or access to information unavailable in a free tier.
Users purchase additional control over their experience within the platform. The underlying service remains primarily digital.
Greater confidence in the experience
Trust also influences perceived value.
In the Populix survey, 75% of the 405 premium-user respondents wanted profile improvements that increased credibility, while 66% expressed expectations concerning security.
Those findings reveal what respondents hoped to receive from premium services. Payment itself does not establish profile authenticity or guarantee safety.
Assistance moving toward a real-life meeting
A different value proposition appears when the service includes the work required to organize a date.
Two people might already be interested in meeting. They still need to identify a workable time, agree on a venue, and confirm the arrangement.
At Clique83, we recognize that the process between an introduction and an actual meeting contains service opportunities.
Our analysis of the match-to-meeting gap explores how mutual interest can stop before two people meet.
A coordinated dating service addresses that part of the experience directly.
A structured offline experience
Hosted singles events represent another form of paid value. Participants purchase admission to an organized experience where they can meet people through facilitated activities and conversations.
The service is tangible: a venue, an organized program, and an opportunity to interact with others in person.
These examples demonstrate why dating monetization extends beyond premium profile features. Each model creates a different relationship between the fee charged and the experience delivered.
How do different dating business models turn user value into revenue?
Dating companies monetize the value they provide through subscriptions, individual purchases, event tickets, or payments linked to specific services.
Each model establishes a different point in the customer journey where a transaction occurs.
Business model | What users pay for | Revenue mechanism |
Freemium dating apps | Additional features beyond free access | In-app purchases |
Premium subscriptions | Continued access to upgraded functionality | Recurring subscription fees |
Offline dating events | Admission to an organized meeting experience | Event ticket sales |
Membership and date coordination | Community access and separately coordinated meetings | One-time membership and per-date payments |
What makes users willing to pay, and what stops them?
Willingness to pay depends on the relationship between perceived value, trust, affordability, and the customer's confidence in what the service will deliver.
A person can value a service without purchasing it. The final decision depends on the price and the uncertainty they associate with the experience.
Trust before payment
Dating introduces personal considerations that differ from purchasing ordinary digital functionality.
Users share information about themselves and consider meeting people they have never encountered.
The Populix findings suggest that credibility and security are important expectations among premium dating users in Indonesia.
For a paid service, that creates a responsibility to explain its processes clearly.
At Clique83, human profile review forms part of the Coffee Date experience. Each profile is reviewed before entering the matching pool, alongside AI-supported introductions.
The review process is a defined operational measure. It does not amount to a guarantee of personal behavior or eliminate every risk associated with meeting someone.
Price sensitivity and uncertainty
People have different budgets for dating, and a fee that feels reasonable to one customer represents a substantial commitment to another.
The Indonesian premium spending data demonstrates the importance of price sensitivity. Among surveyed premium subscribers, the largest reported spending group was below IDR 100,000 per month.
However, subscription budgets and willingness to pay for an individually coordinated offline date measure different purchasing decisions.
A customer considering an offline dating service needs to understand exactly which work is included in the fee.
Clear payment terms matter because the eventual connection between two people remains uncertain.
Someone might enjoy a well-organized date without experiencing romantic chemistry. Another person might decide against meeting after reading an introduction.
Neither situation indicates that the underlying service failed to perform its stated responsibilities.
The commercial foundation of paid dating is the value of a clearly defined service, rather than a promise about the relationship that follows.
How does Clique83 approach monetization through real-life dating?
Clique83 connects monetization with services that support real-life dating, using AI to facilitate introductions and an offline coordination system to help people meet.
Founded in Vietnam by Han Lam and Thuy Doanova, we built Clique83 around an understanding of how people experience dating, particularly the uncertainty surrounding trust and the decision to meet someone new.
Our approach is expressed through two products: Coffee Date by Clique83 and Event Mixer.
What makes Coffee Date by Clique83 different from traditional dating apps?
Coffee Date by Clique83 is an AI-assisted offline dating app designed around a structured journey from a private introduction to a mutually agreed real-life date.
Its differentiation comes from how the matching experience and offline service work together.
Clique83 USP | What makes the experience different | Why it matters to users and the business |
Clique83 reports a female-majority community, unlike the male-majority audiences documented for several large dating platforms in other markets. | Female participation is a distinctive marketplace characteristic worth tracking. Its commercial significance depends on active participation and completed dates, rather than the gender ratio alone.
Human-reviewed profiles | Every profile is reviewed by a real person before entering the matching pool. | Adds a human review step to the experience and helps support confidence in the information presented. It also creates an operational responsibility that must remain consistent as membership grows. |
Members receive one private introduction rather than multiple Match Letters to browse simultaneously. | Gives each introduction more attention and reduces the need for continuous profile browsing. The system can provide subsequent introductions as the journey continues.
Personalized Match Letter | The introduction explains lifestyle, values, common ground and meaningful differences. | Provides more context before meeting, helping users make an informed decision without relying on prolonged messaging. |
Mutual consent and coordinated offline dates | Both members independently decide to meet before date confirmation becomes available. Clique83 then supports arranging the meeting at a partner venue. | Connects the paid coordination service to a defined customer decision and a real-world experience. |
The distinctions go beyond adding premium features to a conventional dating app.
Our model is designed around the journey from a considered introduction to a real-life meeting.
Coffee Date: One-time membership and date coordination
Coffee Date by Clique83 uses two separate payments connected to different stages of the customer journey.
1. One-time community membership
Users pay once to enter the Coffee Date matching community.
After profile review, the AI system supports personalized introductions based on information members provide about themselves.
Membership provides access to the community and the matching experience. It is neither a recurring subscription nor a prepaid package of dates.
2. Date Token after mutual agreement
A Date Token becomes relevant only after both members independently agree to meet.
Each participant uses one token for the confirmed date. The token covers scheduling coordination, partner venue booking, confirmation of the arrangements and assistance when plans change.
Food and drinks at the venue are purchased separately.
If the other participant does not attend, or a user cancels more than 24 hours in advance, the token returns as credit toward another Coffee Date under the stated policy.
The distinction is deliberate.
Membership supports participation in the matching community. The Date Token covers the operational service required to turn mutual agreement into a confirmed meeting.
Event Mixer: Paid participation in organized connection experiences
Event Mixer by Clique83 follows a different revenue model.
Participants purchase tickets to attend organized offline events, Thử Vị Yêu format.
The experience brings singles together through facilitated activities and opportunities for real conversations.
Unlike Coffee Date's one-to-one introductions, Event Mixer allows participants to meet several people during the same event.
How do we evaluate the commercial potential of paid dating?
The commercial potential of a paid dating service is measured through actual purchasing behavior, delivered experiences and the costs required to support them.
Market demand establishes the opportunity. Company-level operating data helps demonstrate how effectively the business delivers on it.
At Clique83, our company-reported figures provide initial evidence of real-world activity.
Clique83 operating evidence | Reported result | What it demonstrates |
Coffee Dates completed | 583 | Confirmed dates that took place with both participants present |
Phone-number exchange after Coffee Dates | 73.9% | Share of completed dates in which both people exchanged numbers |
Connection events organized in 2025 | 128 | Experience delivering organized in-person connection events |
These results demonstrate operational activity. They do not independently establish profitability or paid conversion performance.
The next level of commercial evaluation requires several additional metrics.
Commercial metric | What it helps evaluate |
Membership conversion rate | How effectively initial interest becomes paid community participation |
Paid date conversion rate | How frequently eligible members progress to paid date confirmation |
Revenue per completed date | Revenue attributable to each delivered meeting |
Contribution margin per date | Revenue remaining after direct variable delivery costs |
Customer acquisition cost and payback | How efficiently acquisition spending is recovered |
Each metric answers a different question.
Member registrations demonstrate marketplace reach. Paid conversion measures purchasing behavior. Completed dates show service delivery, while contribution margin reveals the economics behind providing the experience.
Clique83's reported operating figures provide a foundation for evaluating the business. More detailed transaction and cost data are required to assess the strength of monetization model.
What makes a paid dating model sustainable?
A sustainable paid dating model needs to deliver value consistently while maintaining reliable operations and workable economics as the business grows.
Willingness to pay creates an opportunity. Consistent delivery determines how far that opportunity develops.
For Coffee Date, growth depends on the relationship between matching technology and the services required to organize real-world meetings.
As membership increases, matching depends on sufficient active participation within each location and relevant user group. Date coordination also requires dependable venue partnerships and operational capacity.
Four priorities follow from that structure:
Marketplace liquidity: Maintaining enough active members to support meaningful introductions.
Operational consistency: Delivering reliable coordination as the volume of dates grows.
Service economics: Keeping direct delivery costs and customer acquisition spending under control.
Trust and transparency: Making payment terms clear and consistently delivering the stated service.
Dating introduces another distinctive consideration: people who find a relationship they want to pursue might leave the service.
Continued app usage therefore represents only one dimension of customer value.
A business designed around real-life connection needs to understand how efficiently it attracts new customers and how effectively it delivers the experiences those customers purchased.
At Clique83, we believe the wider opportunity within the connection economy lies in building repeatable systems that help people move from digital introductions to real-world interactions.
Free dating apps provide valuable access to potential connections. Paid dating services serve customers who find additional value in specific functionality or support.
Our ambition is to build around an outcome the service can directly organize and measure.
Our result is a date.
Technology supports the introduction. Our service supports the meeting. Everything that follows belongs to the people who choose each other.
FAQs
Does Clique83's female-majority community mean women are more willing to pay for dating?
No direct conclusion about willingness to pay follows from Clique83's reported 75% female membership.
The figure describes community composition, while willingness to pay requires separate payment data.
Understanding its commercial significance requires examining paid conversion, active participation and completed dates across different member groups.
Does paying for a Coffee Date make users more likely to attend?
A Date Token creates a defined confirmation step in which both participants make a commitment to the arranged meeting.
However, payment alone does not prove that attendance will improve. Factors such as scheduling, communication and the ability to change plans also affect participation.
How can a dating company retain commercial value if successful users leave the platform?
A dating business can create value through a completed service even when a customer eventually stops using it.
Its sustainability then depends on acquiring new customers efficiently, maintaining demand and earning enough contribution from the services delivered.
Customer satisfaction and referrals also become relevant indicators, although their actual commercial impact requires company-level measurement.
